Saint Barbara

The Saint Barbara most commonly venerated in recent years is syncretized with the orisha  Shango and most likely is an evolution of the Christian saint of the same name. This assumption is made because this saint just seemed to appear from nowhere, yet she was quickly and completely accepted by many of those devoted to the original standard of Saint Barbara.  This manifestation of Saint Barbara resembles a Latina version of the Archangel Michael in appearance and originated in Mexico. She is known to be a warrior saint who is never seen  without her sword drawn.

She still protects those who pray to her from disasters, albeit in a far more combative and aggressive manner than the original concept of Saint Barbara.  The original Saint Barbara protected (and still does for those who do not acknowledge the evolved version for whatever reason) people from lightning, fire and explosions that take place on the land. This new version also protects people from spiritual and supernatural disasters in the sea and on the astral plane as well. Here is a small list of additional things that the evolved Saint Barbara rushes to defend against:

  • Demons
  • Drowning
  • Nightmares
  • Mermaids
  • Alien abductions
